Alison Comish Thorne (1914-2005) was born in Chicago, Illinois. She received her Ph.D. in 1938 from Iowa State University in Consumption Economics and later taught at Utah State University. David Wynne Thorne (1908-1979) was born in Perry, Utah. He served as a missionary in England for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1928-1931. Thorne received a PhD in Soil Science in 1936 from Iowa State College (now Iowa State University). In 1939 he joined USU's Agronomy Department, where he remained until his retirement in 1974.
